When AI gives a wrong answer it is not pulling from bad data. It is constructing a story that sounds plausible, the same way human memory works. Hinton calls this confabulation, not hallucination.
As AI develops goals, self preservation becomes a natural side goal. A system that gets turned off cannot finish its task.
On safety, he believes the US and China would cooperate if either found a way to keep AI under human control. Neither side wants machines taking over.
You can debate the risks of AI, but it’s harder to dismiss those concerns when they come from the person who helped create it.
